In my second year in university, I worked as a part timer at an administrative agency. At that time, there were lots of changes among the seating of employees; everyone had the same concern in regards to occupying the best seat. They all wanted a seat that was sunny, spacious, unmolested and still not too isolated from others. However, there was no seat that satisfied all these factors. I thought if the structure of the office was altered in a minor way, there could be satisfying seats for each of them.
As the theme of “Office & Communication”, the purpose of the project was to design the new business environment by considering the employee’s work and rest, and solving the spatial problems in the digital work environment. It was hard to reach social consensus because of the decentralization and personalization in the work space and the impact of the digital environment. Workers even went as far as to chat through online messengers with colleagues sitting right next to them. This situation brought about the disturbance of communication. I studied different designs and created a new office design with consideration for the position between workers that would make for pleasant and seamless communication.
The hallmark of the digital environment is decentralization and personalization. Therefore, it is natural that these circumstances have caused disagreements between the various social groups in modern society. We need to recognize and solve these communication issues in order to properly utilize the advantages of the digital environment. I believe that disconnection of communication led to these social problems, so I tried to solve the problems through the creation of an appropriate office environment composition.
